What is Candesartan Cilexetil?

Candesartan, generically known as Candesartan Cilexetil, is a drug that controls the blood pressure of users. It is usually sold in the name of Atacand, which is its brand name. Candesartan is classified in a group of drugs known as angiotensin receptor blockers. The other drugs in this group include Valsartan (brand name Diovan), Irbesartan (brand name Avapro) and Losartan (brand name Cozaar). These drugs like Candesartan work by blocking the chemical angiotensin’s ability to increase the body’s blood pressure. It does this blocking by squeezing or constricting the veins and arteries. As such, the inevitable result is a reduction in blood pressure.

Interestingly enough, Candesartan is also great for patients with heart failure problems. How you may ask? Well, in the process of constricting the veins and arteries, Candesartan reduces the pressure against which the heart has to pump blood to the body which results in less work for the heart. No wonder Candesartan is seen as a useful drug and was approved by the FDA in 1998; making it a drug on the market for almost 14 years.

Candesartan Cilexetil Dosage

The Candesartan drug is not available in generic form. It is a prescribed drug which means in order for persons to take Candesartan; it must be prescribed by a doctor. The usual preparations for the Candesartan tablets are usually in pairs of 4, 8, 16 and 32 mg. once obtained by a pharmacy, these Candesartan tablets should be stored at room temperature, ideally between 59-86˚ F (15-30˚C).

Usually, Candesartan can be used with other drugs to treat high blood pressure. It can also be used alone, that is, without other drugs in the treatment of high blood pressure. As stated earlier, those with heart failure problems may find this drug useful as it can prevent death or hospitalization in serious heart failure occurrences.

Whenever it is prescribed by a doctor, the daily intake is usually set to once daily and should never be over-used or used in an abusive way. In terms of drug interactions, there has been no reported effect of taking Candesartan with another drug. However, other medications that increase the concentration of potassium in the blood as this drug does should be taken with precaution.

For the cases of pregnant women, this drug can only be taken in the first trimester of pregnancy, if the physician allows. If taken in the 2nd and 3rd trimester of one’s pregnancy, Candesartan may cause severe injury or death to the expected child. That is why it is best to not use it at all during pregnancy. If you have been taking this drug and recently found out that you are with child, stop taking it ASAP. Ideally, nursing mothers are also advised against using Candesartan just for the general safety of the child as Losartan, a similar drug tested with rats, was toxic to newborns rats being nursed.
